I know I don't run in the desert, but I do have very fair skin that burns easily. I'm not real fond of sunscreen dripping in my eyes so I figured a decent hat would be the ticket for me. I did a good bit of research before settling on the Outdoor Research Sun Runner hat. A couple of "musts" for me was that the hat had to offer good ear and neck protection (check!), be a … [Read more...]

Hollansburg, Ohio and a Bunch of Chenoweths
For whatever reason, even though I got to bed late last night, I woke up earlier than usual. I decided to take advantage of the "extra" time and get in a morning run for the first time in a while. It was pleasantly cool and the sun wasn't too high in the sky yet. I ran the little town/village/hamlet - whatever it's called of Hollansburg, Ohio. Yep, Hollansburg is small enough … [Read more...]
What’s the Smallest Cemetery in Darke County?
I found an itty-bitty cemetery tonight on my run near Ansonia - Kershner Cemetery. I'm not sure but I think there are only six graves. I'm not normally that interested in cemeteries, but I've been parking by a lot of them (I had NO idea when I started this project that there is a little cemetery about every two miles in any direction you go in Darke County). I don't know … [Read more...]
The Pony of the Hills of Savoy
Tonight was a gorgeous night. Cool and sunny, a rare combo in Ohio in July! I TRIED to get out well before dark but failed, I started running just as the sun was starting to dip to the horizon, and ended well into the dark. Super pretty sliver of a moon, stars were shining brightly... did I mention it was cool? Couldn't ask for better after all the sweaty humid runs I've been … [Read more...]
Darke County Sheriff, at My Service?
Tonight was a good run. One of the first in several weeks where I haven’t felt super stiff and so hot I wanted to lie down in a ditch and pass out. I got a special motivation to run a bit faster my last mile also by the Darke County Sheriff folks… You see, I park in an actual parking spot for my runs whenever possible, but as anyone that lives around here knows, parking … [Read more...]
A Short Afternoon Run in Greenville Ohio
I just decided to take a short run through part of a neighborhood while waiting on family doing some business. It was way too hot and I wasn't dressed for running except my shoes. I think it was around 85 degrees and disgustingly sunny. I'm trying to work up the courage to start running more of Greenville, as I don't care for running in the towns at all. The alleys drive me … [Read more...]
Horrendously Hot on Holtzmuller Road
All I can say is YUCK. It was in the high 80's and it sucked the life out of me. VERY slow slog with a few walk breaks just because I really didn't feel like running anymore but neither did I feel like hitching a ride back to my car. Thankfully, Filbruns Pond in West Manchester was waiting for me when I got done. A tepid pond never felt quite so good! … [Read more...]
Curious Deer on White-Coppess Road
This was a comfortable 6 mile run covering a few roads in Ansonia, Ohio and the loop immediately to the NorthEast. I had another semi-crazy raccoon fussing at me from the edge of some trees and then a bit later I played leapfrog with a nice whitetail deer. Kidding about the leapfrogging bit, but he would run a little, stop and look at me, and then run some more when I got … [Read more...]
It’s a (Scary) Three Dog Night
I've got a problem developing... You see, I've always been fine with dogs and I'm kind of morphing into not trusting any of them anymore. When you realize even a dog named "Pretzel" could put a real hurt on you, you tend to get wary of all of them. I've discovered my number one hazard in running all the roads of Darke County is all the country dogs that think I'm infringing … [Read more...]
Daily Run – New Madison – Coletown – Byrket Rd.
Some runs are fun. Some runs are boring. Some runs you see stuff. Some runs you don't. This was a boring run, in the dark, I didn't see a thing worth mentioning. The very definition of a bread and butter run just to get some miles in: … [Read more...]
