Starting and ending at Bass Cemetery on Ross Road, my most elderly son and I had a somewhat rare opportunity to run together this morning. Sadly, we don’t get out quite early enough and the sun got quite warm REAL quick! It was around 70 degrees when we started and was pushing 80 a little over an hour later. 6.27 miles total.
We had a great discussion on the merits of running an entire length of road twice, or if I could count it as complete if I only ran half way on dead ends… You see, if you look at the map, it kind of looks like a deformed, backward capital “E”. Those sections that end abruptly either connect with the state line or are a dead end road.
One of my rules is that I have to run every foot of every road in Darke County, to the point of breaking the plane of the next road or the county line. I can’t tell you how often I’m tempted to amend my own rule when I’m ready to stop running and I have to cover the same distance twice! In my mind I try to convince myself that I really just need to cover the distance (which half of an out and back section would do!) However, I don’t want to have to go back later and run a bunch of little make-up parts because I short-changed it now… So, run every foot of every road is what I’ll continue to do.
What do you think? Should I let myself slack on those stubby sections?
