I freely admit that running in a place as flat and cornfield-laden as Darke County doesn't offer a lot of variety in scenery. It does however, offer an occasional nice sunset or sunrise. Here's one for you, a sunset: … [Read more...]
My Worst Run Ever. I Do Mean Ever!
I was recently told this blog is "woefully un-updated". I feel pretty bad about that (you can still check out my progress on the "Where is DarkeRunner Today?" page) so here's my most recent, and most awful run ever. Note to self... Don't try to run 11 miles the day after straining your calf, because you decided to do a full speed sprint without any warm-up whatsoever, with a … [Read more...]
Petey’s Pizza to Hursh Road
Tonight was a slow recovery run of 4.65 miles since my legs have been tired the last couple of days. I parked at Petey's Pizza (Thanks for allowing me to park there for a bit!) and ran south to Hursh Road, east to 503 and then back north and over to Petey's. It was a pretty uneventful night overall... no crazy drivers, no animals surprising me... peaceful and calm. I DID get a … [Read more...]
The Great Horned Owl of Lightsville
Tonight was a fairly routine run until the last quarter mile and then I had a n unexpected visitor. You can read about him here. I'm glad I still have a face. :) … [Read more...]
Eidson Woods Preserve Trail – Darke County Parks
If there's one thing Darke County is seriously lacking in, it's trails! It's been fun discovering places I didn't know about, but sadly there still aren't that many outdoor recreation opportunities here. To me, Eidson Woods Preserve is one of the most pleasant little gems in the Darke County Parks system. It has a nice, secluded feeling to it and I rarely encounter other people … [Read more...]
Drew Woods Nature Preserve Run
I guess I should be clear, I didn't actually run IN Drew Woods... I just happened to stumble upon this little 15 acre nature preserve on my run tonight. What baffled me is that there was a sign up marking it as a Nature Preserve, but there was no trail head or parking that I could see. I looked it up when I got home and found out that indeed, that's the case, no … [Read more...]
Ithica, Ohio – The Stop Sign Town
This was the longest run I've done to date, a little over 15 miles, and it included the tiny town/village/hamlet/whatever it is... of Ithica in southern Darke County. The run didn't hurt quite as bad as I expected it to, but I wish I would have brought a snack. Blood sugar was a little low at the end. The one thing about Ithica that really struck me was that there are … [Read more...]
Scentral Dog Park – Greenville, Ohio
Tonight's run took me down County Home Road, a little way down 127 to Hwy 36, over to 121 and back up to the middle of Greenville. I passed by "Scentral Park" which is a dog walking park that opened in March, 2013. It has a little over two acres of fenced area, walking trails, benches, and off-leash areas. It's a pretty neat looking place to take your doggie for some exercise … [Read more...]
Running at Bucks Corner, Ohio
Tonight was a nice slow seven mile run with a lot of gentle elevation changes. I started about an hour before sunset and the sun was just dipping below the horizon as I finished. It was clear and beautiful, with a nearly full moon brightly visible in the eastern sky before the sun went down. Not much wildlife tonight, but it did occur to me that this area has a VERY high … [Read more...]
Hollansburg, Ohio and a Bunch of Chenoweths
For whatever reason, even though I got to bed late last night, I woke up earlier than usual. I decided to take advantage of the "extra" time and get in a morning run for the first time in a while. It was pleasantly cool and the sun wasn't too high in the sky yet. I ran the little town/village/hamlet - whatever it's called of Hollansburg, Ohio. Yep, Hollansburg is small enough … [Read more...]
