I guess I should be clear, I didn’t actually run IN Drew Woods… I just happened to stumble upon this little 15 acre nature preserve on my run tonight. What baffled me is that there was a sign up marking it as a Nature Preserve, but there was no trail head or parking that I could see. I looked it up when I got home and found out that indeed, that’s the case, no trails.
Apparently, Drew Woods is (according to the Darke County Parks website) “the only old-growth remnant of oak-maple upland forest and oak-maple swamp in the state (of Ohio)”. 15 acres. Seriously, that astounds me. Only 15 acres of this type of land was untouched?
I hope to go back sometime for one of the twice-annual naturalist led public visits and see some of those 300 year old trees for myself.
As for my run… It was a muggy 100% humidity evening around 72 degrees. Never fun for me. I started really slow, but ended up going faster and faster as the miles clicked off. I ended with one of my faster miles ever. Just a good bread-and-butter run.
