Princeton Tec Remix Headlamp

April 8, 2014 by DarkeRunner Leave a Comment

Maybe I’m a little strange, or maybe I just have a special sense of adventure, but I really like running in the dark (Not just Darke County, actual darkness!) Not much is more enjoyable than running on a cool evening by moonlight, but sadly, the moon is sometimes hiding and I have to break out a headlamp. My headlamps do triple duty…

  • First, they give me something to flash at oncoming cars so they have a better chance of seeing me.
  • Second, they give me something to flash in the eyes of animals that peer creepily at me from the edges of fields and woods and to intimidate dogs that want to get too close.
  • Third, they help on unfamiliar roads when I can’t see the pavements, and the irregularities pavement can have that seem to be put there just to create injuries.

I have several headlamps right now, and my favorite is the Princeton Tec ReMix. If you have need of a headlamp, I really do recommend going ahead and buying a quality one, the cheapy ones at Wal-Mart (such as Energizer and Ozark Trails) either aren’t built to last, are too bulky or their battery life s awful. Or all three!

The Princeton Tec Remix is compact, light and the 3 AAA batteries last a long time for me. Granted, I tend to turn mine off a lot and run without light rather than let it burn the entire run, but I can go weeks without changing the batteries. Not bad!

I also appreciate that it swivels up and down so I can better aim the light if I happen to be holding my head higher or lower than usual. It has both a high and low setting for your choice of maximum light or maximum battery life. I tend to use low a lot as I just need enough light to avoid stumbles most of the time.

One problem I’ve had with a couple of mine is that the battery door plastic gives out over time. Kind of a bummer, but one quick phone call to the folks at Princeton Tec and they had free replacement parts in the mail right away, complete with instructions on how to replace the part easily. Nice!

Best of all, the Remix comes in several options… I love the one that has both white and red light. I use the red light to maintain my night vision in the woods when my Remix serves overtime duty for nighttime map and compass navigation. Oh, and the price is very competitive. There are other lamps that may be technically better out there, but I haven’t found one yet that has the features of the Princeton Tec Remix for the same value price. Take a look over at Amazon.com and compare a few before you buy. Please let me know if you find one that’s better for the money!
